Artists Lecture: George Awde

20/08/15 7pm

Join us for a special lecture by artist George Awde. Awde’s photographs chronicling the transitory existence of a group of Syrian boys living in Beirut are part of our current exhibition ‘I Spy With My Little Eye…

The images raise questions of belonging, coming of age, and the fragile states between adolescence and manhood. Considering both land and body, Awde’s photographs explore the scars of the flesh with those of the soil. His practice of using a large format camera, and the slow process it requires, contributes to the intimacy and aesthetic of his work. This process mirrors the gradual approach of building trust and familiarity with his subjects over the years.

The artist will discuss these works in detail as well as talk broadly about his practice.

George Awade lives and works in Doha, Cairo and Beirut. He is an assistant Professor of photography at Virginia Commonwealth University in Doha, Qatar and co-director of marra.tein, a residency and research initiative in Beirut. George received his BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art (2004) and his MFA in photography from Yale University’s School of Art (2009).
