Film: My Love Awaits Me By The Sea

4/02/16 7:30 pm

My Love Awaits Me By The Sea (2013) is an acclaimed poetic documentary which narrates the story of director Mais Darwazah, taking us on her first-time journey back to her homeland, Palestine.

Leaving a secluded reality, Mais  follows a lover whom she has never met, Hassan, a Palestinian artist who unveils a beautiful and utopian world where fairytale and reality are woven together to question the elusiveness of place and the need to believe in dreams. In a land fragmented and engulfed by years of struggle, she finds her tranquil love awaiting her in a ‘home’ protected and held together by today’s Palestinians. They defy their everyday reality – far removed from their needs – by holding onto their dreams.

Like the Young Artist of the Year Award 2014 (YAYA14), this film pays tribute to Hassan Hourani, a Palestinian artist who, with his imagination, rose above the Occupation. Hourani completed Hassan is Everywhere, a children’s book of illustration and poetry, just before his tragic death by drowning in the forbidden sea of Jaffa in 2003.

Mais Darwazah worked across the Middle East in architecture, graphic design and television documentaries, before starting an independent film career by making a series of short experimental films. After completing an MA in Documentary Directing (UK, 2008), her graduation film Take Me Home (2008), was selected for screening at numerous international festivals. My Love Awaits Me By the Sea, is a feature documentary which was nominated for CPH:DOX award, Muhr Arab Award at Dubai International Film Festival, and won best documentary at FEST New Directors.
