How to Clean the Dust from the Artwork

Performative Tour

23/11/17 7pm

This performative tour of the exhibition explores it from the point of view of a fictional collector. Some of Pascal Hachem’s works change moment to moment, or exist only for the duration of the exhibition. How can such work be owned or preserved? In this tour, curator Rose Lejeune and academic Dr Rebecca Gordon weave together practical considerations of preservation with the poetry of traces and ephemeral gestures in the artworks.

Rose Lejeune is a curator and researcher. She works with public institutions and private individuals to explore new methodologies of collecting contemporary art with a specific interest in context-based, social and performative practices. Collecting the Ephemeral is a consultancy, commissioning and research project which Lejeune has been running since autumn 2015. It has consisted of a series of new commissions within existing collections, consultancy and collection’s reviews, and public programming. Through this Lejeune explores how artists with performative, ephemeral or context-specific practices can be represented in collections and archives and how artists use existing collections as inspiration for new work.

Dr Rebecca Gordon is a researcher and sessional lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art. Her research challenges the concepts of authenticity and material significance in contemporary art, particularly in relation to preservation and future installation. An important part of this process has involved interviews with artists in order to site their voices at the heart of the discussion. She has worked in the History of Art Department at the University of Glasgow, published international papers, and written several commissioned artists’ exhibition texts.
