The Balfour Declaration: An Invisible History Workshop

Talk & Events

18/05/17 7pm

Oxford students present a multimedia discussion on their discoveries tracing Oxford University’s role in the Balfour Declaration, and look at colonialism at Oxford, past and present. Followed by a question and answer session moderated by Dr Karma Nabulsi.

The year 2017 marks 100 years since the Balfour Declaration, a British policy paper in which then-Foreign Secretary James Balfour gave written support for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in historic Palestine. Many of those who drafted the document were faculty and former students of Oxford University who maintained a close relationship with the university.

This interactive history workshop is presented by a student research network showing how the Balfour Declaration is intimately tied to the history of the university. The document’s dramatic impact continues to shape the lives of those in Palestine living under military rule and settler colonialism, and those Palestinians expelled from it in 1947-48 as a result. The event is chaired by Prof Karma Nabulsi.

Dr Karma Nabulsi is a Professor of Politics and International Relations at Oxford University, and Fellow in Politics at St Edmund Hall, Oxford.
