Supper Club

18/03/17 7pm

£35.00

Dina Mousawi and Itab Azzam present a special three course meal of recipes from their book Syria: Recipes from Home. The publication is a cookbook with a difference, with a unique story behind it. Friends and passionate cooks Itab Azzam and Dina Mousawi have worked with Syrian women in the Middle East and Europe to collect together the very best recipes from one of the world’s greatest food cultures. In a special supper club hosted in The Mosaic Rooms’ main exhibition room these recipes will be brought to your table.

The authors got to know the women who inspired these recipes through their highly acclaimed theatre projects working with Syrian refugees in Lebanon. They spent months cooking with them, learning their recipes and listening to stories of home. From hot yoghurt soup with turmeric to cherry meatballs, this is a delicious celebration of the unique taste, culture and food of Syria – and a celebration of everything that food and memory can mean to an individual, to a family and to a nation.

After working on theatre project Antigone of Syria in 2014, Dina Mousawi went on to produce and direct Terrestrial Journeys, a six-week theatre workshop with Syrian women living in Beirut’s refugee camps. She grew up in Baghdad, surrounded by the food of her father’s large Iraqi family. Before joining world renowned theatre company Complicite, Dina baked cakes for Mouse & De Lotz, her sister’s café in Hackney, and cooked at Park Road Kitchen, her brother’s rotisserie and deli in Battersea.

Itab Azzam is a London based Syrian producer. Her extensive work for television includes the award winning BBC and PBS series Exodus (Broadcast and Liberty awards) and BBC’s Syrian School, the series East West, and Bizarre Foods: Syria for the Travel Channel. She produced and directed We Are Not Princesses a film documenting the journey of six Syrian women rehearsing and performing Antigone. She is the Director of Sabbara, a social enterprise empowering women through economic employment and psychological support.

Syria: Recipes from Home will be published in May 2017 and 50% of the profits will go towards the Hands Up Foundation – a charity that raises funds and awareness for those affected by the crisis in Syria. You can pre-order your copy with our bookshop by calling 02073709990.
