Screening and Talk

1/06/17 6:30 pm

Join us as artists Judy Price, Sarah Wood and Oraib Toukan discuss their work with archival film, in conversation with Eugene Rogan.

The event features a screening of films from Price’s research into film archives of the British Mandate period alongside other artists’ films which use appropriate film footage. There will also be a screening of Sarah Wood’s short film For Cultural Purposes Only (2009), tracing the history of the The Palestinian Film Archive, which contained over 100 films showing the daily life and struggle of the Palestinian people. The archive was lost during Israel’s siege of Beirut in 1982.

Judy Price works across photography, moving image, sound and installation. She experiments with different techniques and ways of collecting material to address collective struggles and create new perceptions of the experiences of individuals and social groups. Price is also a Course Director in Photography (MA) at Kingston University and a Senior Lecturer in Moving Image (BA) at the University of Brighton. Her work has been exhibited and screened internationally including at the Imperial War Museum, the Barbican, Galerie Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Montreal, and the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre, Ramallah. Her exhibition Still is currently on at The Mosaic Rooms.

Sarah Wood works with the found object, as an act of reclamation and re-interrogation. She works mainly with documentary images to examine the relationship between the narration of history and individual memory. She is currently looking at the meaning of the archive, in particular the politics of memory, asking why some objects are preserved while others are ignored and why preservation is made at certain historical moments.

Oraib Toukan is an artist and Clarendon Scholar at the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford. She is visiting tutor at the Ruskin and the International Academy of Fine Arts in Ramallah, Palestine. Recent exhibitions include the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, Qalandia International, The Center for Contemporary Art Glasgow and the 11th Istanbul Biennale. Toukan graduated from Bard College in Fine Art, with a focus in photography.

Eugene Rogan is Professor of Modern Middle Eastern History in the University of Oxford and Director of the Middle East Centre at St Antony’s College, Oxford. He took his BA in economics from Columbia and his MA and PhD in history and Middle Eastern studies from Harvard. He is author of The Arabs: A History (2009) and The Fall of the Ottomans: The Great War in the Middle East (2015).  His works have been translated into fifteen languages.
