Marianne Fahmy

Opening 2027

Open Tue-Sun, 11am-6pm, Free Entry

The Mosaic Rooms will present the first UK solo exhibition by Egyptian artist Marianne Fahmy, featuring a new commission and recent works. Fahmy’s latest project explores the 1882 bombardment of Alexandria, focusing on the militarization of the sea and water as political borders. Central to this is a new installation that reimagines the telescope—transforming it from a tool of surveillance into a symbol that subverts the colonial gaze.

The exhibition also includes Laws of Ruin, a new parafictional film that contrasts ancient Alexandrian water systems with unrealised political visions from the past. Set in a future where the city is submerged and in ruins, the film highlights underground water structures that have historically withstood natural and human disasters. Within these imagined ruins, the voice of 1970s Egyptian political and feminist activist Arwa Saleh is reactivated, linking past and future struggles.

Fahmy lives and works in Alexandria. Her practice spans film and installation, exploring memory, landscape, and alternative histories. She received the 2021 Prince Claus Fund Seed Award and has participated in residencies at Le Cube in Morocco and Pro Helvetia in Switzerland.
