What role do cultural institutions play in times of global crisis?

Listen back to this discussion with Fatos Ustek (Director, Liverpool Biennale), Elvira Dyangani Ose (Director of The Showroom), Tirdad Zolghadr (curator and writer) and Mahmoud Abu Hashhash (Director of the Culture and Arts Programme, A.M. Qattan Foundation) as they discuss the possibilities for the future post Covid19 from a local and global perspective.

Could this moment of global crisis be embraced to reimagine a new type of collective future? The pandemic has highlighted unsustainable modes and it is clear that new ways of working institutionally need to manifest. Will these times provide a habitus for new transnational models of togetherness? How can institution work together, on a global and local level, in order to dismantle old patterns and yield alternative practices? This discussion is an opportunity for organisations in the UK and Palestine explore commonalities and divergences and learn from each others contexts.

What are some of the major shifts that need to happen in order for us to reimagine the new commons? Outside its consumerist and entertaining role, can art and culture devise alternative political ideas, ones that are socially engaged and responsible, eco-centred, (self)-critical, collaborative, pedagogical and financially dynamic. What can we learn from each other, and how can we better work together? Are new structures of solidarity possible?

Can we devise alternative political ideas and tools, decolonise our institutions and education curriculums and be active players and allies in anti-imperialist and anti-racist movements. How can art and culture work as an effective tool to incite a radical and positive change?
