Dar Al Sulh-Domain of Conciliation

Evening III

8/07/17 7pm

£35.00

“You are eating a dying language from the plate of a ghost.”

The Mosaic Rooms is proud to present Dar Al Sulh, a unique supper club by the artist Michael Rakowitz, in collaboration with Regine Basha and  Dr Ella Habiba Shohat. Join them in The Mosaic Rooms gardens for an al-fresco three-course meal featuring the artist Michael Rakowitz’s Iraqi-Jewish grandmother’s recipes. Using ingredients, combinations of flavours, and tableware specific to a population that are no longer served in Iraq today, these dishes reflect a period when “Jews were once Arabs too”.

In between each course Michael Rakowitz, Regine Basha and Dr. Ella Habiba Shohat provide personal reflections, toasts and interventions. Basha’s Tuning Baghdad project which presents archival music from Iraqi Jewish musicians from the period will feature throughout the evening.

Dar Al Sulh, or Domain of Conciliation, is a territory where an agreement between Muslims and non-Muslims has been made and provides freedom of religion, autonomy, and protection. It is this agreement that applied to Jews in Iraq, and elsewhere in the Middle East. The Iraqi Jews exodus began from 1940s as a result of riots and reprisals leading up to and after the establishment of the state of Israel. Zionist and other narratives have since adopted this exodus to support their specific political positions and arguments. This supper club project aims to counter these, and instead create and reclaim a space for shared celebration of Arab Jewish culture. The project was first realized in 2013 with the Moving Museum in Dubai and has had various presentations internationally. This is the first time it will be presented in London and the UK.

Michael Rakowitz is an artist living and working in Chicago. His work has appeared in venues worldwide including dOCUMENTA (13), P.S.1, MoMA, MassMOCA, Castello di Rivoli, the 16th Biennale of Sydney, the 10th Istanbul Biennial, Sharjah Biennial 8, Tirana Biennale, National Design Triennial at the Cooper-Hewitt, and Transmediale 05. He has had solo exhibitions at Tate Modern in London, Lombard Freid Gallery in New York, Alberto Peola Arte Contemporanea in Torino, and Kunstraum Innsbruck. Rakowitz’s ‘The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist’ will be the next work to appear on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square and will be unveiled in 2018. He is Professor of Art Theory and Practice at Northwestern University.

Regine Basha is an independent curator based in Brooklyn, NY. Since 1993, she has been curating innovative exhibitions for public institutions, civic spaces, magazines and private galleries nationally and internationally. With an exploratory approach to exhibition design, production and reception, Basha works closely with artists to create specific contexts in which to encounter the work. Her exhibitions have received grant awards from The Andy Warhol Foundation, The Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation and The National Endowment for the Arts as well as critical press in The New York Times, Artforum, Modern Painters, Art Papers, Wire, Bidoun, Art Lies, Artforum and NPR Radio.
