Encounters in Gendered Noise

Listening

15/08/19 7pm

Free

Embarked since 2013 on a multifarious artistic research on situated sonic practices in Morocco, Gilles Aubry presents sound bits and videos pertaining to gender separation and diversity, female representations, impersonal intimacy, and the noise of women’s daily struggles. This provides him with an occasion to reflect on his own experience in encountering whiteness and masculinity in places of agricultural labour, art practice, sung poetry and colonial sound archives.

Gilles Aubry is a Swiss sound artist, musician and researcher living in Berlin. His practice is based on a performative approach to field recording, sound documents and historical sources, often collaboratively. He critically addresses listening, sound practices, music, technology and environmental voices, examining their relations to power structures and ideologies in various contexts. Using formats such as installation, live performance, film, publication and radio, he creates works that playfully reconfigure materials and discourses into speculative spaces for shared experience and reflection.
