Enghelab Street, A Revolution Through Books: Iran 1979-1983

Artist Hannah Darabi talks to curator Catherine David about propaganda books in Iran around the time of the revolution. Darabi will be in conversation about her archival research into the photographic culture in these books in her project entitled Enghelab Street, A Revolution Through Books: Iran 1979–1983, presented at the exhibition. Her journey through the books produced in these years leads is launched this evening in her book of the same title.

Enghelab Street (Revolution Street) is known for its bookshops and publishing houses and was named after the events in 1979 in Iran.

Hannah Darabi is based in Paris. Artist’s books – alongside other forms- are the medium that she privileges to communicate her work. Her books exist in numerous public and private collections, including the MoMA library and archives (New York), Bibliothèque Kandinsky (Centre Pompidou, Paris), the Bibliothèque National de France (Paris) and the Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique (Brussels).

Catherine David is the deputy director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. She was previously curator at the Musée National d’Art Moderne and the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris. From 1994 to 1997, David served as artistic director for Documenta X in Kassel, Germany. Since 1998 she has been director of the long-term project Contemporary Arab Representations.

This event is part of the public programme accompanying the exhibition When Legacies Become Debts, curated by Azar Mahmoudian.
