Engineering the Middle East: Tales of Scale, Beauty & Ambition

25/09/15 7pm

The rise of the Middle East as an economic and political powerhouse has driven rapid development of the region’s built environment – the world’s most celebrated architects have responded with ambitious designs.

Arup’s building engineers have played a central role in facilitating many of these architectural visions, achieving design feats along the way. An evening of rapid presentations followed by a discussion over drinks about a series of recent Middle Eastern building designs – Heneghan Peng’s Grand Egyptian Museum, Zaha Hadid’s LEED Platinum King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre, Mangera Yvars’ Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies, Carpenter Lowing’s cablenet sculpture ‘Sana Al Nour’ for Abu Dhabi International Airport, and Aedas’ awarding-winning Al Bahr Towers.

Founded in 1946, Arup first came to prominence with its structural design for the Sydney Opera House, soon followed by the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Sixty years on, Arup is a global engineering-led multidisciplinary consultancy whose staff combine creativity with technical excellence. An employee-owned firm, Arup’s building engineers deliver engineering solutions that allow innovative architectural visions to be fully realised, rather than quashed or diluted.
