Mohamed Melehi in Conversation

Artist's Talk

6/06/19 7pm

Artist Mohamed Melehi speaks to curator Morad Montazami about his first UK solo exhibition. The talk will trace his career as a major figure of postcolonial Moroccan art and of modernism in the Global South.

Mohamed Melehi is a painter, designer, photographer, muralist and cultural activist. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tétouan, Morocco, going on to study in Seville, Madrid, Rome and New York before returning to post independence Morocco in 1964. Melehi was a leading member of the Casablanca Art School where, alongside fellow artists Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Chebâa and others, he led a radical reformation of art education. Melehi was also part of the Casablanca group, founded in 1966.

Melehi has helped shape the aesthetics of political exchange and artistic networks throughout the Maghreb and Pan-Arab regions including designing for the cultural and political journal Souffles and co-founding the cultural journal Integral. Melehi was co-founder of Asilah Arts Festival, an annual festival, famed for its street exhibitions, which still runs today. In 1974 he founded Shoof editions, the first Moroccan owned design studio in the country. He has also held government posts advising on the arts in Morocco.

New Waves: Mohamed Melehi and the Casablanca Art School is the first solo exhibition of his work in the UK.

Mohamed Melehi (b. 1936, Asilah, Morocco) has been the focus of numerous solo exhibitions including at the Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, 1995, and the Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York, 1984. He has participated in group shows in Casablanca, Baghdad, Algiers, London, Paris, Rome, Zurich and New York among others. His work is held in international museum collections including Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris; MOMA, New York; and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha.
