Family Fun

25/05/19 2:30 pm

Free

Join oud player Rihab Azar to explore this wonderful stringed instrument. We will be exploring the maqams (modes) and rhythms of Arabic music through sounds, creative play and drawing.

Rihab is a London based, Syrian oud player. Born into a musical family, she started learning the oud when she was 7 years old. She studied at the Conservatoire of Damascus, and completed an MA in Music Education at IOE-UCL fully sponsored by the Foreign and Common Wealth Office. In 2014, Rihab became the first woman oudist to perform accompanied by the Syrian National Orchestra for Arabic Music. In 2016, she was recognised by the Arts Council England as a musician of ‘Exceptional Promise’. Since then, Rihab has performed around the UK as a soloist and in ensembles and orchestras, including the outstanding London Sinfonietta. Her performances include such iconic venues as the Southbank Centre, Cumberland Lodge, the British Museum and the British Library.
