Nadje Al-Ali & Laleh Khalili

10/05/12

As part of our What Purpose Free Speech When No One Listens? programme, The Mosaic Rooms is delighted to present Nadje Al-Ali and Laleh Khalili on:

Thursday 10th May 2012, 7pm

The increased militarization of Iraqi society in the wake of the 2003 US-led invasion has not brought security and human rights to its citizens. In their book What kind of liberation? Women and the Occupation of Iraq Nadje al-Ali (co-authored with Nicola Pratt) concluded that the idea that a military invasion can improve women’s rights is deeply ?awed. The occupation has unleashed a degree of violence that can only be described as civil war, in which the most vulnerable groups – the poor, minorities, women – have been most severely affected. Nadia al-Ali will be discussing the nature of this violent breakdown with Laleh Khalili.

Nadje Al-Ali is Professor of Gender Studies at SOAS, University of London. Her publications include What kind of Liberation? Women and the Occupation of Iraq (2009, University of California Press, co-authored with Nicola Pratt); Iraqi Women: Untold Stories from 1948 to the Present (2007, Zed Books), amongst many other publications about women and gender in the Middle East.

Laleh Khalili is a senior lecturer in Middle East Politics at SOAS.  She is the author of _Heroes and Martyrs of Palestine: The Politics of National Commemoration(2007), Time in the Shadows: Confinement in Counterinsurgencies (October 2012), and the editor (with Jillian Schwedler) of  Policing and Prisons in the Middle East: Formations of Coercion (2010).
