Artist Sam Samiee will be in conversation with anthropologist Sumaya Kassamali about how the methodology of this Persian literary genre could be used as an approach in the visual arts. The conversation attempts to revisit the notion of Adab as an ethical and aesthetic model, and suggest how it could be applied in the contemporary art world.

Sam Samiee is a painter and essayist based in Amsterdam and Tehran. He finished his two years residency at Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten in 2015 and currently teaches at ArtEZ Institute for Arts and Design, the Netherlands. His research focuses on the history of psychoanalysis, art history, and Persian literature.

Sumayya Kassamali received her PhD in Anthropology from Columbia University in 2017. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Humanities at Tufts University, and has previously been based at Harvard University and Freie University Berlin. Her research is concerned with how life is given meaning under contexts of violence and extreme precarity, and her dissertation work focused on the lifeworlds of Asian and African migrant workers in Beirut, Lebanon.
