This discussion led by director and writer Tahgred Elsanhouri, curator Hadeel Eltayeb, and artist Alaa Satir considers the revolution in Sudan reflecting on the history and present of solidarity and political resistance. The conversation will explore the role of women and art within the recent uprisings.

Taghred Elsanhouri is an independent director, researcher and writer in London. In her work she addresses political and social transformations with a documentary yet personal lens. Interested in the role of art as tool in peace-building, mediation and in truth and reconciliation processes, Elsanhouri focuses her work on Sudan. She is known for her films Our beloved Sudan (2011), Mother Unknown (2009), The Orphans of Mygoma (2008), Sudanna al Habib (2012) and All About Darfur (2005) which received the award of the American Anthropological Association and was also awarded at the Zanzibar International Film Festival. Elsanhouri is also the founder and director of the Sudan Cultural Healing Film Festival and organized a number of cultural projects in Sudan and London.

Hadeel Eltayeb is a curator who explores identity and cultural production in her work. She is currently Associate Curator at The Media Majlis at Northwestern University in Qatar, where her exhibition From Visionaries to Vloggers: media revolutions in the Middle East opened in January 2020. She was previously curator at Al Riwaq Art Space in Bahrain (2015-2017).  Other recent projects include This Will Have Been: Archives of Past, Present and Future with Locale Sudan (2019) and [Media]tions with Mawane (2017).  She was a 2019 Research fellow of the British Council at Venice Biennale, and her research project Cultural Imagination and Cultural Memory in Venice is currently being developed into a wider collaboration with the School for Curatorial Studies in Venice. Her writing has been published on the Venice Biennale blog and in Arab Literature Quarterly (Fall/Winter 2019). As co-curator of This is Awkward collective, she has taken part in the Shubbak Festival 2019 and Glasgow Zine Fest.

Alaa Satir is a Sudanese Cartoonist who graduated as an architect from the University of Khartoum in 2012 and currently doing her masters in the UK. She works as a graphic designer and illustrator. Morning Doodles, her first solo exhibition at Khartoum’s Elguneid Center in 2017 addressed topics like feminism, social media and politics. In addition her work was shown as part of a group exhibition in March 2018 promoting women’s rights and challenging gender-based violence.
