Play Lab:  Lum’a

Moving Images, Moving Voices

21 March 2026

1-3:30pm
Free, drop-in

Join us for the second session of Play Lab: Lum’a with a multi-sensory film workshop led by filmmaker and art facilitator Nia Fekri.

Inspired by the exhibition Bouchra Khalili: Circles and Storytellers, this workshop invites children and their grown ups to explore storytelling through moving image and sound.

You will draw and scratch directly onto strips of 16mm film, discovering how marks transform into moving images when projected. Then step inside the film itself as it is projected through fabric and onto walls, experimenting with live cinema and playing with voices and bodies as images shift, flicker and dance through the space.

Alongside this, multi-sensory installations invite children to explore textures, surfaces and light in different ways – opening playful moments for curiosity, movement and discovery.

This is a space for exploration, experimentation, and joyful sharing – where children watch their creations come alive and see how their marks, movements and sounds shape moving images in real time.

Suitable for ages 0-11

Stories in Motion

28 May 2026

11am-1pm
2pm-4pm
Free, drop-in

Join us for the third session of Play Lab: Lum’a, where stories emerge through play, movement, and imagination. This playroom invites children into an immersive space where characters, worlds, and narratives shift across materials, light, and performance.

In this playroom, children will move freely between making and playing, building worlds with sets and projections, creating characters through puppets and costumes, and bringing them to life through shadow, gesture, and video. In this space stories can change form, overlap, and grow through encounter and collaboration.

What’s inside:
Shadow theatre, Puppet-making, projected backdrops, and open-ended materials for building sets and shaping stories.

This is a space for curiosity, creativity, and experimentation, where children can step into their stories and shape them in their own way designed by Chahine Fellahi.

Suitable for ages 0-11

Please note, this event takes place over two session, which are the same. You may arrive at any point during those times. Each session is open play with no beginning or end:
11am - 1pm: Session Open
1pm - 2pm: Session Closed
2pm - 4pm: Session Open

PLAY LAB:  LUM‘A

11 July 2026, 3-5pm

Free, drop-in

لُمعَة – Lum‘a – a glimmer, a glint, a flicker of light

Join us for this Saturday Play Lab: Lum’a. Garden of Letters session led by artist, filmmaker and facilitator Niki Kohandel. In this session children will be invited to play with analogue projection, drawing and layering techniques to turn letters of their favourite alphabet into new characters.

Play Lab: Lum’a invites children and families into a series of gently unfolding workshops, where light moves across surfaces, filters through colour, and takes shape through open-ended, sensory-led play. Children take part in multicoloured shadow play, invent their own languages using gestures and shapes, and make objects such as lanterns to take home.

Inspired by the spirit and legacy of artist and curator Dia Batal, the programme draws on Arabic calligraphy, poetry, and storytelling to create multi-sensory play labs that are iterative, evolving, and responsive to participants. Each play lab invites new ways of sensing through shadow and light, gesture and symbol, texture, movement, and sound. In these spaces, light becomes a playful language, shifting, layered, and open to interpretation.

Materials encourage touch, slowness, and discovery, creating a space where light can be shaped and held. Lum’a is a place for noticing - small glimpses, quiet moments, and the wonder that lives in the spaces between.
