In the Presence of the Absent Bird
by Hoda Siahtiri
Wednesday 25 Nov, 7pm
For this special ceremonial listening session as part of the programme songs these jaws cannot hold, Hoda Siahtiri will use her voice to trace the presence of something once tangible and within reach which now feels distant. Developed in 2026, in the midst of the war, this new work reflects on relationships with the land in Iran. It invites to a space of remembrance and attentive listening in a world under threat.
The accompanying music is composed by Parisa Esfandiari.
Moving between poetry and song, and electronic sounds, the listening session is following a time travel through sounds that seem to disappear. The piece draws on the ceremonial dimensions from Hoda’s longterm research into and engagement with the Bakhtiari women’s songs.
The work is created within Hoda’s artistic framework Salon Lavoir, through which she brings together her individual practice and her collaborations with other artists to create ritual and musical spaces.

ARTIST
Hoda Siahtiri is an audiovisual performance artist whose work centres around voice, embodied memory, and ancestral heritage. She likes to call herself a diseuse: someone who voices stories from different perceptions of time and reality. Through her PhD research, Singing The Silences, she came to voice in singing nearby her lineage of Bakhtiari women in the west of Iran. By floating in the processes of sonic embodiment, she bridges intersectional possibilities of knowledge transmission. Hoda’s music performances, audiovisual exhibitions, short films, and ceremonies have been featured and shared in various festivals and cultural venues in Belgium and Europe.
