freeFor the month of September, Mosaic Rooms welcomes Bint Mbareh for a residency and takeover as part of sounding towards - -.
Alongside making new music in the space, her residency will unfold as a series of events, a non-musicians' choir, surprise jams, workshops, silent reading hours, and sharing and listening sessions. Bint Mbareh will use this time to research ways of bringing participants together to learn outside failed and deteriorated institutions. In a world where surveillance feels ubiquitous and inescapable, these gatherings are imagined as an invitation to hide, using togetherness itself as a tool for unintelligibility.
Bint Mbareh's favourite thing to do is see where the learning happens when we're not trying to learn in a systematic way. This often involves discomfort, the body feeling vulnerable and reconfiguring itself in a space where it's nudged towards being less passive as a listener. This could involve complete silence, and it could involve speaking and it could involve a secret third thing which she will explore with audiences over the course of a week of public programming.

Choir with Bint Mbareh
A choir session designed for non-musicians questioning where the voice begins and ends. Is speech really the highest form of communication? What can we do with our voices when we're not afraid of failure and what can we learn that can't be neatly placed into language? RSVP required
Saturday 19 September, 2-5pm
Workshop with Yasamin Ghalehnoie
A workshop by Bint Mbareh and Yasamin Ghalehnoie exploring learning through compulsive repetition, listening closely for small, distilled changes and traces that sound leaves behind. Special attention is paid to percussion as a way of marking time through consensus and negotiation. RSVP required

Water memories readings and workshop
Bint Mbareh, Emilie Glazer and Marleen Boschen invite you to read, discuss and critique a work-in-progress article on the fragmentation of water and memory in Palestine. RSVP required
Friday 2 October, 5pm
Music Listening Session
Bring your unfinished things. Music of pieces you'd like to perform or that you'd just like to silently play on the speaker system, and we will all listen together. You can let the room know if you'd like feedback or not. RSVP required
Friday 2 October, 7.30pm
Surprise Jam
A handful of incredible musicians have been secretly invited to join this surprise jam. No lineup, no hints. Musicians will use what materials are available in sounding towards - - as well as bringing their own weird and wonderful instruments. RSVP required
Tuesday 6 October, 10am
Silent Reading Room
Three hours of shared silence, just reading together in a room. Reading materials will be provided, including recommendations by Bint Mbareh from Mosaic Rooms Bookshop. RSVP required

ARTIST
Bint Mbareh is a sound researcher with a focus on water in Palestine. Her interest in the physical parallel between the water wave and the sound wave leads her into questions of border dissolutions (between bodies, between states, between tenses), and into the possibility of being enveloped by the voice, by sounding communally similarly to being enveloped by a water body. She challenges settler colonial epistemology by taking seriously Palestinian ways of knowing, from rain-summoning music to shrine pilgrimage as an instigator to political revolution.
