Race Rhythm Revolution

freeRhythm Race Revolution (RRR) is an 8-week course with Aditi Jaganathan that uses music and its attendant cultural texts, as a site of deep study, through which ideas of race, gender, colonialism, healing and transformative justice are collectively explored. It is a radical learning space tracing the sonic(s) of resistance.
Revolution is at the beating heart of RRR. South African musician and Jazz musician, friend and comrade Asher Gamedze, calls radical cultural work outside the gaze of racial capitalism, ‘outside work’. RRR resides in the outside spaces where, ideas, knowledge and creativity working with(in) liminal spaces, refusing the hold of the colonial gaze, and leaning into new ways of being together. As part of a dynamic ensemble, the RRR ecosystem has the power and potential to bend the will of the spirit towards refusal.
These gatherings are an invitation to listen, read and think together, exploring the ways music, race and revolutionary praxis rub up against each other. Through revolutionary resources for (un)learning together we will look at the different ways musical cultures not only create the soundscape for revolution but are a tangible and integral part of the cultural fact of liberation.
Reading lists will be provided to participants. Places are limited.

Session 1: Sound as the beating heart of revolutionIn this session we will explore the ways in which sound culture has been used as a tool of rupture, refusing the dull hum of the colonial logic. Thinking with Eugene McDaniels, Fred Moten and Miriam Makeba, we will flesh out the radical poetics of music and how it prises open pathways for otherwise possibilities.

Session 2: Organic Music Society: A cosmos of being otherwiseUsing the life and practice of Don Cherry, we will move with the ways in which he created a mirror, for life to reflect the radical impulse of music. Through improvisation and a deep study of global music, we will witness the power of his learnings through the music he wove with others.
