Hajar Reads: Ecologies
19 August 2026, 6.30pm
‘Terra Nullius. “Empty” really means full of water and earth and sky, rich with microscopic life and innumerable plants and fungi and animals and stones and people, so many people, so many homes. To the coloniser, this land is empty.’— Pear Nuallak, Pearls from Their Mouth
Join Hajar Press and Mosaic Rooms for a reading group on the theme of ecologies.
In this edition of Hajar Reads, we’ll reflect on relationships to land that span generations and persevere despite borders, settler regimes and capitalist extractions. We’ll consider what it takes to cultivate and protect the land, and how in turn the land cultivates and protects us.
We’ll use short extracts from selected Hajar Press titles—including The Stone House (Yara Hawari), Curious Affinities (Sophie Chauhan) and Pearls from their Mouth (Pear Nuallak)—and extracts from Dignified Life: Outliving Impossible Ecologies, co-edited by Reem Shadid, Odessa Warren, Siegrun Salmanian and Angelina Radaković, as a starting point for our discussion.
This reading group will be facilitated by Amber Obasi, Hajar Press alongside Odessa Warren, curator, Ibraaz and Siegrun Salmanian and Angelina Radaković, curators, Mosaic Rooms.
Extracts will be shared in advance of the session, but there’s no expectation to have read them all to take part — just come along ready to listen, think and share!
Hajar Reads is new reading and discussion space, organised by Hajar Press, open to all. Each month, a themed selection of extracts from Hajar Press titles is taken as a starting point to imagine beyond the way things are and reflect on our responsibilities to the world and to each other.
Every three months, Hajar Reads will be co-hosted with Mosaic Rooms.
