Conceived spatially and conceptually with artist collective El Warcha Collaborative Design Studio, sounding towards - - brings sound artists and interlocutors Bint Mbareh, 1000 Pounds to Survive Us, felix taylor and Aditi Jaganathan into Mosaic Rooms to take over, inhabit and gradually transform the space for the next five months. Each collaborator arrives with their own distinct frequencies to assemble within El Warcha’s built infrastructure, converting Mosaic Rooms into a site of collective listening and sounding.
Each artist will host their own time within it, shaping the space, setting the terms and opening the doors to their own communities and collaborators. They will move between the sonic dimensions of resistance and revolutionary education, the score as a technology for memory and communication, choir, poetry and the resonant meaning of call and response. Through sounding towards - - the gallery shifts away from functioning as a stage for finished work. Instead, it moves towards experiments in sound, perhaps events, activations and gatherings that don't have names yet.
The invitation is to sonically implicate the body, to improvise, to linger, to sprawl, to turn toward one another. To gather instruments and friends. Those who enter may find themselves part of an ensemble – staff, resident artists and participants gathering in constellations.
Here, improvisation is held as a method and a way of moving through the world’s dizzying uncertainty together. Instruments, recording tools, listening stations. Try things, misuse things, leave things running. Make mistakes and keep returning to them. Press record anyway. The guiding principle, in sound and in space, is the demo, the rough draft as the thing itself.
Simultaneously, From–To, an installation by Gaza-based Dahaleez Collective is assembled from sonic material recorded in 2024 and 2025. It is a sonic archive of the now-gone Al-Rashid Street in Gaza City gathered through the sounds that survive - the sea, traffic voices. At its core is a composition by Mahmoud Abu Warda, written during the eleven-day war in 2021 and produced four years later with the Lisbon Symphonic Orchestra. From–To is an auditory journey through place and time, vibrating between what was, what is and what might be. A sonic space that refuses disappearance.
What are we sounding towards? The question is held without a looming answer. Here, the towards -- is deliberately left as an open door, as a direction, not a destination.
Who’s coming?
This text was written in May 2026. Like the project, it is a draft that remains open to revision as new ideas emerge.
