Artist’s Tour: Dia Batal
19/09/15 12pm
Join us for a special artist led tour of Dia Batal’s exhibition Tracing Landscapes. Batal will provide an in-depth guide to the pieces featured in the exhibition as well as further expand on her work. The tradition of using script and language on objects and furniture, in architecture and public spaces has informed the designers practice. Batal has developed a multidisciplinary approach, creating context specific work, mostly designed for physical interaction. This style marries the art of calligraphy with the functionality of design, and in conjuncture language and the meaning of words with the use and form of these pieces.
Tracing Landscapes explores the meaning of place and belonging in an age of migration and immigration. Although the resulting works have a distinctive aesthetic quality, each invoke or speak to contemporary social, cultural, and political concerns. The exhibition is a resonant and personal reflection on memory, identity and belonging.
Dia Batal was born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1978 where she studied design, before moving to London to complete her MA in Design and Critical Practice at Goldsmiths College. Her work has been shown in collective and solo exhibitions in Beirut, Manama, Amman, Paris, Liverpool and London. Batal has also worked on a number of community outreach projects for institutions such as British Museum, V&A, Iniva and The Mosaic Rooms amongst others. She is based in London.
