22/05/13
Join us for a special book launch and discussion with the author as we delve into the archives of Hisham Khatib through his new book: Jerusalem, Palestine and Jordan – In the Archives of Hisham Khatib.
Jerusalem, Palestine and Jordan – In the Archives of Hisham Khatib is an extraordinary rich publication mapping the history and society of the Holy Land, as recorded in writings, paintings, maps and photography of Western travelers and observers. The book spans 400 years of Ottoman Rule, but bears a heavy focus on 19th Century watercolors, including works from Edward Lear, Carl Haag and Carl Werner. The stunning images are accompanied by an engaging and deeply informative text.
Dr Hisham Khatib has spent almost 40 years amassing the vast and historically valuable collection of representations of the Near East featured in this book. He has collected paintings, lithographs, travel books, maps, atlases, and photographs on Jerusalem, Palestine, and Egypt. The artworks included here (paintings, prints, maps, books, photographs, and even postcards) depict the Holy Land during the Ottoman period (1517-1917).
Dr Khatib will give a talk and presentation and copies of the book will be available to buy in the bookshop.
