The Modern Egypt Project is a British Museum initiative to expand ways of collecting the modern world. Project curator Mohamed Elshahed discusses what it means for an object to be modern and Egyptian and whose history the project represents.

Mohamed Elshahed is a Cairo-based architect, independent researcher and writer. Elshahed teaches architectural history at the American University in Cairo and runs the Cairobserver. In 2014-15 he was an Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices post-doctoral fellow at the Berlin-based Forum Transregionale Studien. He is currently the Curator for the British Museum’s Modern Egypt Project.
