Visit Mahmoud Khaled’s two exhibitions in London in this shuttle tour between Brent Biennial and The Mosaic Rooms and learn more about the artist’s installations that challenge notions of a house museum and identity through a contemporary queer lens.
The day will start with an artist and curator-led tour of Mahmoud Khaled’s installation, Proposal for a Museum of the Unknown Crying Man at Brent Biennial. A publication of the same title will be launched in presence of the co-editor of the book, Sara El Adl. The shuttle will transport visitors to The Mosaic Rooms, for a special tour of Mahmoud Khaled’s installation and exhibition Fantasies on a Found Phone, Dedicated to the Man Who Lost it. Followed by a drinks reception.

About
Mahmoud Khaled was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and currently works in Berlin. His practice is both process oriented and multidisciplinary, can be regarded as formal and philosophical ruminations on art as a form of political activism, and a space for critical reflection. He has presented in international solo shows and group shows such as Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn (2019), Witte de With, Rotterdam (2018), Istanbul Biennale (2017), Sharjah Bienniale (2017), Whitechapel Gallery, London (2016). Mahmoud Khaled has been a DAAD Artists-in-Berlin fellow in 2021.
Sara El Adl is a writer and curator from Cairo. She holds an MA in International Human Rights Law from the American University in Cairo. Throughout her academic, curatorial, and creative practices, her research has revolved around biopolitics of censorship and moral policing. She is currently a Visual Cultures PhD candidate at Goldsmiths, University of London.The publication project Proposal for a Museum of the Unknown Crying Man is an extension and continuation of an artwork titled Proposal for a House Museum of an Unknown Crying Man by artist Mahmoud Khaled, in which he imagines a house museum for an anonymous person who has entered Egypt’s queer history as an “unknown crying man“ and iconic image.
