Conflict City – Jerusalem

Dr Shadia Touqan speaks about the difficulties and politics of cultural heritage presentation.  She will examine the revitalisation of heritage in the Old City of Jerusalem.  The event will be chaired by Robert Bevan and will be followed by a question session with the audience.

Shadia Touqan is an architect and urban planner with extensive experience of working in the UK and the Middle East. She is currently an independent international expert on architectural preservation and revitalisation of historic cities and has been involved since 2014 with UNESCO and other international cultural organisations on issues related to “Post Trauma and Post Conflict” reconstruction of historic sites and cities. Touqan led and directed Welfare Association’s comprehensive Old City of Jerusalem Revitalization Pogramme for 17 years (1997-2014), winning the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004. She is a member of RIBA, and ARB (UK) and of JEA (Jordan).

Robert Bevan is the architecture critic for the London Evening Standard. He was previously editor of Building Design and the architecture critic for two other daily newspapers The Australian and the Australian Financial Review. He is the author of The Destruction of Memory: Architecture at War (2006) and is a member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) that advises UNESCO on world heritage.
