Performance

RSVP below for this in person event.

Join artist James Jordan Johnson for a new performance exploring knowledge systems – ways to understand the illegible and alternative ways of knowing. Through organic material, movement and sound, James will perform recurring gestures to activate objects and memory.

This event is part of our In Response programme strand, devised in a yearlong collaboration in 2023 with Open School East as part of their Alumni Development Strand.

James Jordan Johnson is an artist-researcher (b.1997, London) based in Margate working within performance and sculpture. His practice is concerned with Afro-Diasporic material culture and performative histories. Thinking about the role memory plays in the political matters of citizenship, legibility, land and myth-making, he tends to ground his work within site-specific or public spaces, using topographical mapping, material and object activation. Johnson was an Open School East Associate in 2021-22.

Established in 2013 and located in Margate, Open School East (OSE) is a free, independent art school and community space that focuses on collective learning through the arts. OSE supports cultural practitioners at an early stage of their career to develop and sustain their practice, and enable young people and adults alike to learn new and transferable skills, develop their confidence and shape their creative voice by becoming active learners and co-producers of OSE’s programmes including The Associates Programme, The Young Associates Programme, Despacito Art School and Associates-led Public Programme.
