Talk: Nawal El Saadawi

22/10/15 7pm

The Mosaic Rooms are pleased to present an evening with celebrated Egyptian writer Nawal El Saadawi to mark the launch of beautiful new editions of her classic works, published by Zed Books. El Saadawi will be in conversation with Dr Shereen El Feki.

The novels tackle religion, love and female emancipation. In these powerful and hypnotic novels, El Saadawi brilliantly sets tales of personal struggles in the context of corruption and paints an unflinching picture of female oppression in traditional Islamic societies. El Saadawi has been a prominent figure and activist in Egypt and will discuss her work and life, whilst also reflecting on themes of sexuality and the body, and recent political, social and cultural developments.

Nawal El Saadawi is a renowned Egyptian writer, novelist, and activist. She has published over forty books, which have been translated into over thirty languages. Her novels include ‘Woman at Point Zero’, ‘God Dies by the Nile’, ‘The Circling Song’, she has also written two volumes of autobiography ‘Daughter of Isis’ and ‘Walking Through Fire’, non-fiction collections including ‘The Hidden Face of Eve’ and others.

Shereen El Feki (@shereenelfeki) is the author of ‘Sex and the Citadel: Intimate Life in a Changing Arab World’, a study of changing sexual attitudes and behaviours across the Arab region. ‘Sex and the Citadel’ has been translated into six languages, and was nominated for both the Guardian First Book Award and the Orwell Prize. She is an award-winning healthcare correspondent with The Economist and a presenter with Al Jazeera English. As a Senior Fellow with Promundo, Shereen is currently leading IMAGES-MENA, a pioneering study of men, masculinities and gender equality in four countries across the Arab region.
